Introduction to Jousting (plus in-depth rules)

Jousting is for subscribers and ultra-subscribers. Granted, that's why I'm posting it here. Still, it takes a surprising amount of time to understand (and even more time to hack out the basics of the physics used). So, here is what I've been able to gather through many experiments.

The basics
There are three types of spaces in the jousting courses:
pigeons 'p'
bats 'b'
archers 'a'
open land 'c'

On open spaces, you can perform any move (with exceptions for the Side Swoop, which we'll cover later). The other three spaces are obstacles, which must be handled differently. Only certain moves may be performed while you are ON or moving OVER these obstacles (again, we'll cover these later).

There are three courses. Each of these courses have different lengths and different speeds at which you begin the course.

Jousting Platform (10 spaces): 5 - 10 yards per second
Outcrop Fall (15 spaces): 10 - 20 yards per second
Masters Peak (25 spaces): 20 - 35 yards per second

The actual speed at which you begin is random within the range listed. You'll notice this through experience.

There are 7 different moves: Gallop Forward, Gallop Left, Gallop Right, Crack Whip, Side Swoop, Lance Shot, and Cradle Stab.

- You can perform any move if you are not ON or moving OVER an obstacle, except Side Swoop
- Side Swoop must be performed AFTER a Gallop Left or Gallop Right
- Cannot do a Side-Swoop ON any obstacle
- Gallop Left and Gallop Right are identical **
- If you are on p or b, you can ONLY do a Gallop Left or Gallop Right
- If you are moving OVER p or b, you can Lance Shot/Gallop Left/Gallop Right
- If you are ON/moving OVER an archer, you can ONLY do a Lance Shot/Gallop Left/Gallop Right
- Cannot do a Cradle Stab, Crack Whip, or Gallop Forward ON or OVER any obstacle

The most critical rule:
- Your speed must remain over zero

Now, when I say "ON an obstacle", I'm referring to something like this:
c - c - b - c - c

When I say that you're "moving OVER an obstacle", it's something like this:
c - c - b - c - c
and the next move you make will be
c - c - b - c - c

Speed
How many spaces you move forward depends entirely upon your speed. Here are the calculations for speed:

1 space: 1-7 yps
2 spaces: 8-12 yps
3 spaces: 13-16 yps
4 spaces: 17-20 yps
5 spaces: 21-27 yps
6 spaces: 28-32 yps
7 spaces: 33-35 yps

Every move that you perform has an impact on your speed.** Also, the wind modifies the speed impact of some of the moves. For example, if there is an wind from the East at 3yps and you perform a "gallop forward", your speed will increase by 1yps. If the wind is from the West at 3yps, then your speed will decrease by 1yps. If there is no wind, then your speed will stay the same.**

So the impact of the wind on the moves is as such:

Wind Impact:
IF wind is from the West at 3 yps, wind factor is -1
IF wind is calm, wind impact is 0**
If wind is from the South at 2yps, wind factor is +1
IF wind is from the East at 3 yps, wind factor is +1

This wind factor is used to figure out the speed modification of Galloping.

Gallop forward (1 point): **
0 yps + wind factor

Rules:
- Cannot be performed ON or OVER any obstacle

Gallop Left/Right (2 points): **
if current speed <= 5: speed + 0 + wind factor
if current speed > 5: speed + -1 + wind factor
if current speed > 15: speed + -2 + wind factor
if current speed > 25: speed + -3 + wind factor
if current speed > 35: speed + -4 + wind factor

Rules:
- May be performed ON or OVER any obstacle

Crack Whip (3 points):
speed + 3 (no wind factor)

Rules:
- Cannot be performed ON or OVER any obstacle

Side Swoop (4 points):
speed - 3, no forward movement

Rules:
- May not be performed ON any obstacle
- You do not move forward when this is performed

Lance Shot (5 points):
speed * 0.70 (decreases your speed by 30%, rounded)

Rules:
- Cannot be performed ON a p or b
- May be performed OVER a p or b
- May be performed ON or OVER an a

Cradle Stab (5 points):
speed + 2 (no wind factor)

Rules:
- Cannot be performed ON or OVER any obstacle
- Moves you forward randomly 1-3 spaces

NOTES:
Here are some items of which to make note:
- Both Cradle Stab and Crack Whip increase speed
- Both Lance Shot and a Gallop Right/Side Swoop combination will decrease your speed
- All moves advance you down the course based on your speed, except side swoop and cradle stab
- If you don't like the way the course is laid out, select the 'back' link. If you use your back button in your browser, you will crash (just your horse and rider, not Internet Explorer or anything).

One more note:
The number of spaces that you move forward depends on your speed after the move is performed. So, if you are moving at 9 yps and you perform a Lance Shot, your speed will decrease to 6 yps and you will move 1 space forward.

Bug:
There is one bug with Jousting. The first space on the track is not used and is not counted. Also, there is one extra space at the end of the track that you cannot see. On this last space, you may only perform a Gallop Forward, Gallop Right, Gallop Left, or Crack Whip. Any other space is causes you to crash.
