Language Barrier One day, the father of my Chinese friend Gilbert was brought to the hospital. I go with him to visit his father confined in the ICU because of a stroke, Their close relatives was also there. They are all speaking Chinese and I don't understand what they are talking. After some minutes of chatting they all left to go home and my friend ask me to watch his father while he accompanied his relatives outside the hospital. I went to the left side of the bed to place all the present and things needed by the watcher of his father in the hospital., As I was about to put down the packages the old Man suddenly have a convulsion. Di ta guae yong khee... Di ta guae yong khee...Di ta guae yong khee! the old man says until he lost his breath.. Because of the sudden death of his father, Gilbert was very emotional in his sorrows so I decided to leave awhile. While on my way home in a taxi I called my other friend Noel also a Chinese and ask him what the word "Di ta guae yong khee" means. "don't step on the Oxygen" he said and ask where did I heard that phrase., |
