Subject: Staying in Control | |||||
Two men strolling one day through the park Saw a man all alone sitting there. On his face was a scowl, his demeanour was grim. In his eyes was a cold, icy glare. One of the men, who was wearing a smile, Approached the loan figure to say, “Good morning, good sir, and how might you be “On this beautiful bright Autumn day?” No response to these words did the silent man make, The scowl was still holding in place. No crack in the thickness of the solid veneer Of hostility that shone on his face. For many more days, they continued their stroll And the same scenario played The hard words acknowledged by a hard stony glare, Not one effort more was there made. His companion was angered, and asked of his friend, “How much more of this can you take? “Why don’t you just give him a piece of your mind “You are making, I think, a mistake.” “If I would respond in the style of this man, “To myself I would fail to be true. “To emulate merely what he has displayed “Is a thing that I could never do.” “When I can treat others with care and respect, “As I would wish all to treat me, “It is then that I am in control of myself, “And the person in charge would be me.” And then on one day, he failed to appear, But a young lad sat there in his place. He peered at the men as they went strolling by, With a quizzical look on his face. As he looked them both over, he said to the one, “My uncle described you to me, “And the day that he died, he gave me a note, “And insisted the note you should see.” “Twas terminal cancer I had” said the note, “With but a short time left to live. “I was so engrossed in my personal fears, “Not to you any thanks would I give.” “The kindness you showed me I did not deserve, “But you opened your heart up to me, “And you asked for nothing from me in return. “I’m ashamed of what I seemed to be.” “You’ve given me back my lost faith and my hope. “Much more to me now it is worth. “Though I am gone now, ‘twas a comfort to know “There are people like you left on earth.” In the eye of the man then there glistened a tear, And he reached up and brushed it away. “I’m so very thankful I stayed in control. “There’s nothing more now I can say.” |
